DENTON – North Texas head coach Andrew Palileo has announced the promotion of current Mean Green assistant Carrie Gurnell to associate head coach.
"Carrie has been an integral part of our program, working in every facet of the day to day operations," Palileo said. "She has brought her experience of playing at a high level into her coaching career, which has been a great asset to improving our individual performance. She's become a great role model and mentor for our players, and I look forward to seeing her growth as a coach in her new role."
This will be Gurnell's first stint as an associate head coach in her young career. She previously served as the Mean Green's assistant coach for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, where UNT compiled a 36-28 overall record and a 21-7 mark in Conference USA play.
"I'm grateful to Coach Palileo for this opportunity," Gurnell said. "I'm so excited to start this next phase of my career with the Mean Green."
Gurnell primarily works with defense and outside hitters, which have shown major improvements since she stepped foot in the North Texas Volleyball Center. Her successful career as an outside hitter at Purdue also lends her to help with different positions around the floor.
Before coming to Denton, Gurnell spent two years at Gardner-Webb University as an assistant coach. She also has eight years of coaching experience in the junior club circuit and even served two years coaching children in the Austrian public school system with VC Tirol. Gurnell has also participated, trained and coached in the USA Volleyball system.
