Gibson, Hamlet Voted All-Conference

DALLAS — The 2020 Conference USA regular season champion North Texas men's basketball team's leading scorers Javion Hamlet and Umoja Gibson were voted to all-conference teams on Monday. Hamlet was voted to the five-man first team all-conference honor and Gibson was voted to the five-man second team all-conference honor.
This is the first time in program history UNT has had multiple C-USA All-Conference honorees in a single season. The last time they had more than one all-conference winner in a single season was after the 2009-10 season (four) when the team went on to win the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. It was the last time UNT reached the NCAA Tournament.
Hamlet was voted first team all-conference after in league play leading C-USA in assists (95), assists per game (5.3 apg), assist/turnover ratio (2.7), free throw percentage (88.3%) and was fourth in scoring (17.9 ppg). Hamlet is the first ever Mean Green men's basketball player to be named C-USA first team all-conference. The last UNT men's basketball player to be named first team all-conference was Tony Mitchell after the 2011-12 season in the Sun Belt Conference.
Hamlet's 147 total assists this season currently ranks sixth all-time in UNT history for a single season. He has an assist rate of 34.8, which means 34.8 percent of the field goals that occur when he's on the floor are assisted by him. That ranks 30th in the nation and he's the only C-USA player that ranks in the top 75 in the nation.
Where Hamlet has really gained attention is his ability to close out games. In the 14 conference wins this year, which was a program record, Hamlet shot nearly 75 percent from the field in the final five minutes of games and scored an average of seven points during the final five minutes of conference wins. As a team, North Texas has dominated league opponents at the end of games. In its 14 conference wins, UNT held its opponents to a combined average of 27 percent shooting following the last media timeout of regulation with Hamlet leading the charge.
Gibson, was voted second team all-conference this year after finishing second in 3-pointers made (86) and ninth in scoring (14.5 ppg) for the whole season. Gibson, a redshirt sophomore, was voted last year to the all-freshman team after he made 99 3-pointers throughout the year, which was a league record for a freshman.
Three times this year Gibson made at least five 3-pointers in a game. He's had 14 games this year with at least three made 3-pointers. He's had a team leading 24 games this year with double digit scoring and a team leading seven games with 20 or more points. He scored a season-high 27 points on Jan. 23 in the Mean Green's 98-78 win over UT San Antonio in Denton. The 27 points scored are tied for a team-high this season.
Gibson is just the fourth Mean Green basketball player ever to be named to an all-freshman team and also an all-conference team in his respective UNT career.
Hamlet and Gibson this year combined for nearly 30 points per game, making them the fourth-highest scoring duo in C-USA.
