HONOLULU, Hawai'i — The North Texas women's tennis team is in Hawai'i for a pair of matches during spring break. They start Tuesday with a neutral site match against the Liberty Lady Flames (6-4).
Liberty is led by head coach Jeff Maren. From 2006-12, Maren was the Mean Green's associate head coach and helped lead UNT to a pair of Sun Belt Conference titles and alongside Sujay Lama built the early foundation to what has been a consistent machine in the state of Texas. Maren left North Texas in 2012 to take the reins of the Liberty program where they've won at least 15 matches in all but two seasons since and have never had a losing season under his leadership.
After playing Liberty on Tuesday they'll face Hawai'i on its home court Thursday before returning home to Denton.
Tuesday will be the third time North Texas (7-6) has faced the Lady Flames all-time. The Mean Green are 2-0. They last played them in 2016.
Thursday will mark the first time in program history North Texas will play Hawai'i (5-5).
"We are looking forward to playing two very good teams this week," said head coach Sujay Lama. "We have to bring our A game to be successful. The key for us is continuing to improve with each challenge so we can peak at conference."
Tuesday will be UNT's first match in 10 days.
The Mean Green are 13 matches into the year and have posted an overall .566 winning percentage in singles and .618 winning percentage in doubles. Freshman Hala Khaled Badwy has been dynamite for the Mean Green. The freshman when paired with senior Alexandra Heczey is 7-4 in doubles. In singles, Badwy is 7-4 and has won two straight singles matches.
Overall, sophomore newcomer Maria Ponomareva leads the team in singles wins with nine. She's 9-3 on the year with four of the nine coming at the No. 2 position. When Ponomareva is paired with junior Nidhi Surapaneni, the two are 8-3, all at the No. 2 position.
The middle of the singles lineup is where North Texas has really dominated. At the No. 3 and No. 4 position, UNT is a combined 19-5 so far in those two spots.
