DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team and its head coach Grant McCasland on Wednesday finalized the National Letter of Intent signing of 6-foot-7 NJCAA All-American Terence Lewis.
Â
Lewis averaged 18.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game for New Mexico Junior College this past season and along with his all-American honor he was named Western Junior College Athletic Conference All-Region and all-conference. The sophomore had 14 double-doubles this season, scored over 30 points in a game three times, averaged 60 percent from the field and 82.5 percent from the free throw line for the 23-9 Thunderbirds. Â
Â
Nationally, he ranked in the top 60 in scoring and rebounding.
Â
After the season, he was named NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention. He joins a Mean Green team that also has former NJCAA All-Americans Javion Hamlet, James Reese and JJ Murray on its roster.
Â
Lewis led New Mexico Junior College in scoring, total rebounds, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, field goal percentage and was second in blocks.
Â
In his freshman season in 2018-19 for Florida Southwestern, Lewis began to make waves as one of the nation's most efficient scorers as he shot 71.2 percent from the field. Despite playing just 15 minutes per game, Lewis averaged 9.4 points per game. He also led Florida Southwestern in rebounding with 5.4 boards per game.
Â
Lewis joins a five-man UNT recruiting class that includes soon-to-be Yates High School (Houston) graduate Rubin Jones who signed with the Mean Green in November. This past month, Mykell Robinson, Abou Ousmane, Mardrez McBride also signed NLI's to join the C-USA defending champs. It's a recruiting class that Rivals ranks No. 1 in Conference USA, No. 4 in the state of Texas and No. 48 in the nation.Â
Â
UNT won the C-USA regular season championship after going 14-4 in league play and beating Western Kentucky 78-72 in overtime in Denton on March 1. It was the program's best league record in its 57-year history as a D1 program and its first conference league title in 31 years. Returning guard Javion Hamlet was named the league's player of the year.
