DALLAS – North Texas men's basketball guard Javion Hamlet was named the 2019-20 Michael L. Slive Conference USA Male Athlete of the Year on Tuesday. He becomes the first-ever UNT student-athlete to receive the award.
"I want to thank my teammates, coaches, our great fans and the man upstairs," Hamlet said. "It's a humbling award but one I know that wouldn't be possible if we didn't win as a team. I'm excited for another year at North Texas with my teammates and working hard to defend our championship."
Hamlet will be a redshirt senior this coming season.
Last year Hamlet helped lead the Mean Green to their first regular season league title in 31 years as he averaged 17.9 points and 5.3 assists per conference game and North Texas finished with a 14-4 conference record. The 14 league wins were a program-record. He led the league in conference play in assists (95), assist/turnover ratio (2.7) and free throw percentage (88.7%). He finished fourth in scoring and 11th in field goal percentage (52.9%).
When it was late in the game no one in C-USA was better than Hamlet.
In the final five minutes of conference games, the North Texas point guard averaged 6.5 points and shot 66.6 percent (22-33) from the field. In the final five minutes of the 14 conference games won, he shot 74.9 percent from the field. Furthermore, he drew fouls late in games and shot a league-best 88.8 percent from the free throw line in the final five minutes of games.
After the season, he was named the C-USA Player of the Year — the first UNT men's basketball player to be named conference player of the year since Deon Hunter in 1989. He also became the first men's basketball player at UNT to earn National Association of Basketball Coaches First Team All-District honors and United States Basketball Writers Association All-District recognition.
Hamlet is the first C-USA men's basketball player to be named to the conference's male athlete of the year honor since Memphis' Chris Douglas-Roberts in 2008. Following the passing of C-USA's founding commissioner Michael Slive, the award has been named in his honor. The winners are determined by a vote of the conference's Athletics Directors
