DALLAS – The North Texas volleyball team earned one of Conference USA's 2020 Sport Academic Awards on Tuesday for posting the highest grade point average amongst all C-USA volleyball teams in the 2019-2020 academic year.
This marks the first occasion that Mean Green volleyball has won Conference USA's Sport Academic Award, and they are the first program from North Texas to be honored since 2015.
"I'm excited for this recognition because our players worked hard during this pandemic," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "The accountability that they each held for themselves resulted in a great team effort. I also want to thank our academic advisor, Alexis Guess, who worked closely with each of our players to ensure their academic success during the spring semester."
At the beginning of each semester, the Mean Green set a goal to reach a 3.7 team GPA. Although they have come close in recent years, North Texas finally broke through in the spring 2020 semester with a 3.78 overall GPA. Ten women earned a spot on the President's List with a perfect 4.0 GPA, while the remaining four landed on the Dean's List. The Mean Green finished the entire 2019-2020 year with a 3.7 cumulative GPA.
Senior Valerie Valerian graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in just three years while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA. She will pursue a Master of Science in Accounting: Audit & Assurance at UNT while wrapping up her final year on the hardwood for the Mean Green.
"When we talk about our culture as a team, we want to strive for excellence both on and off the court," Valerian said. "That starts with setting a good standard in academics. We want to set ourselves up in the future as hardworking, disciplined individuals in the work field, and we are proud to see this reflected through our academics as a program."
Rice was presented C-USA's Institutional Excellence Award, which is given to the school who recorded the highest GPA during the academic year for all student-athletes in every sport.
