FORT WALTON BEACH, Florida – North Texas redshirt senior receiver and kick returner Deion Hair-Griffin was selected to the preseason watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, the organization announced Thursday.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
Hair-Griffin is very active within the Denton community and plays a major role within North Texas' athletics' SAAC organization (Student Athlete Advisory Committee). He was the national leader in kick return average at 40.8 yards per return in 2019 and earned second team all-conference recognition from C-USA's 14 head coaches. Hair-Griffin had one kick return for a touchdown, which was a 96-yard score in the season-opener against Abilene Christian on 8/31. That 96-yard return tied for the ninth-longest return in program history. Hair-Griffin had five returns in 2019 of 50-plus yards, four of which are of 60 or more yards (96, 71, 63, 61 and 50).
Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities' Sports Information Departments and will close on October 15. A current list of nominees can be found at www.wuerffeltrophy.org beginning on August 1. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 3 and finalists will be announced on November 23.
