DENTON – Head coach Jalie Mitchell added a pair of graduate assistants to the staff of North Texas women's basketball in Rebekah Hand and Tierra Murrell.
Hand joins the Mean Green following a stellar career at Marist where she finished second all-time in scoring, second in 3-pointers, second in field goals made, second in free throw percentage, fourth in scoring average, fourth in free throws made, fifth in three-point percentage, fifth in rebounds and seventh in assists. As a senior, the Argyle native averaged 18.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists while earning All-MAAC First Team for the third time. Hand became the first player in NCAA history to record multiple streaks of 50+ consecutive free-throw makes and concluded her career as the NCAA Division I active leader in free throw percentage.
"We are so glad that Rebekah has chosen to not only come home and continue her education at the University of North Texas, but also that she will join the Mean Green Women's Basketball program as a graduate assistant," Mitchell said. "She had an exceptional career as a student-athlete at Marist, and I believe she will soar even higher as she obtains a master's degree and grows as a leader and mentor on the other side of the game.
"We are extremely proud of Rebekah and look forward to all of the ways that she will make an impact here at UNT. She has a great personality and is easy to get to know. Along with an incredible work ethic, she is sharing her knowledge and experience with our young women and intentional about helping them to succeed. We love her already, and you will too! Please help us welcome her back home."
Murrell came to North Texas last season after graduating from Prairie View A&M where she worked with both the men's and women's basketball teams. At PVAMU, the Dallas native handled all equipment needs as the equipment manager and was also the video coordinator.
"Tierra joined us last year as a graduate manager and did an incredible job with our team from organization to travel. She has big aspirations and follows those up with action. It is inspiring to see a young woman so motivated, hardworking and determined! She's a great role model for our young women.
"It gives me great pleasure to promote Tierra to a graduate assistant position for her final year. I appreciate the commitment she has shown since day one and honor it with this promotion. She will continue to set the tone for those around her and ensure that we are always ready and prepared. Her contribution to our program is invaluable."
