George To Play Pro Ball In Switzerland
7/29/2020 9:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
DENTON - Anisha George, an All-Conference selection for North Texas women's basketball, signed a contract with Hélios VS in the Swiss Basketball Championship, the top league in Switzerland for women's professional basketball.
"The process of signing was fairly easy; it's way different from college recruitment," George said. "All of the teams that were interested in me went through my agent, and then came to me with the best option."
George was a strong inside presence for the Mean Green the past two seasons, as evidenced by her Second Team Conference USA honor in 2019-20 and her spot on the All-Defensive Team last season.
Last season, George averaged team-highs of 14.3 points and 8.9 rebounds and led C-USA in field goal accuracy to finish fifth in the nation at shooting over 64 percent. George scored a career-high 26 points against UTSA Feb. 22, and her 26 rebounds collected against Mid-America Christian was the highest single game total in Division I in 2019-20. A double-double machine, the St. Croix, Virgin Islands, native recorded at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in 10 contests in 2019-20 and notched six last year.
During her UNT career, George recorded over 700 points, nearly 500 rebounds and over 60 blocked shots. Last summer, George starred for the Virgin Islands National Team at the Pan American Games held in Peru. She led the Games in rebounding, field goal percentage and was second in scoring at nearly 21 points per game.
Mean Green head coach Jalie Mitchell said, "I am overjoyed that Anisha has signed to play basketball professionally. She is certainly talented and has used her God-given gifts to earn this opportunity. It's a proud coach moment! I know that she will represent herself, her family, the U.S Virgin Islands and the University of North Texas well in Switzerland."
Most recently, Hélios was the Swiss Supercup Finalist in 2018 and the Supercup winner in 2017.
"I don't know what to expect," George said. "I'm nervous but ready for the experience."
George's first action with the Hélios is scheduled for September.
