Day 5 Notebook: First Day in Full Pads

DENTON - Day five of fall camp, presented by Rhino Steel Buildings, marked the first practice for the Mean Green in full pads.

PLAY OF THE DAY: The play of the day today came during the team portion of practice, when sophomore cornerback DeShawn Gaddie (Arlington) intercepted a deep ball, where he fought to wrestle the ball away from the receiver..

HIT OF THE DAY: Senior defensive lineman Dion Novil (Abilene) recorded a tackle for loss during the team period, sending the running back quickly in the opposite direction with a monster hit.

Key Moments:

During 7-on-7 drills, redshirt sophomore quarterback Jason Bean (Mansfield) connected with redshirt sophomore receiver Roderic Burns (Houston) for a 20-yard gain, fitting the throw into a tight window.
Junior defensive back Keelan Crosby (Anna, Texas) tipped a pass over the middle that was eventually intercepted by redshirt sophomore safety Javier Neal (Whitehouse, Texas).
Senior defensive lineman Asher Frow (Fullerton, California) made a nice tackle to stuff the run for a short gain during the team period.
Redshirt freshman defensive back Jevin Murray (Pearland, Texas) made a diving pass break-up to halt a series during the early portion of the team period.
Senior linebacker Tyreke Davis (Denton) made a nice tackle-for-loss on a designed quarterback run.
Bean and senior receiver Jaelon Darden (Houston) connected on a 65-yard touchdown during the team period, where Bean showcased his arm strength, getting the ball to Darden ahead of the safety, and then Darden darted past the safety and made his way to paydirt.
True freshmen running back Isaiah Johnson (Lubbock) showcased his physicality with a strong run to pick up a first down during the team period, after making a decisive cut deep in the hole to evade the first level of defenders.
Redshirt freshman linebacker Gabriel Murphy (Dallas) and sophomore linebacker Kevin Wood (Converse, Texas) combined for a big hit on the ball carrier to hold him to a minimal gain.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Kason Martin (Manvel, Texas) picked out redshirt freshmen receiver Kealon Jackson (Houston) to pick up a first down in traffic.
Redshirt freshman running back Oscar Adaway III (North Little Rock, Arkansas) had a sequence of tough, physical runs throughout the team period on Wednesday.
- Adaway picked up a first down with a 10-yard gain inside the red zone.
- Adaway had a 15-yard pick up later in the day, finishing his run with contact on the safety.
Freshman defensive lineman Kortlin Rausaw (Wylie, Texas) stopped the running back for a short gain during the team period.
Inside the 10-yard line, Gabriel Murphy broke up a pass on a lob that was intended for the tight end at the back of the end zone.
Bean picked out redshirt senior receiver Deion Hair-Griffin (Fort Worth) for a 20-plus yard gain on a well-placed ball, which allowed Hair-Griffin to make a sliding grab safely away from the defender.
In the red zone, Crosby broke up another pass, this time to halt a drive on a third down play.
Senior running back Nic Smith (Fort Worth) picked up a gain of 20-plus yards with a run to the outside during the team period.
Wood showcased his speed from the linebacker position, chasing down redshirt freshman quarterback Amani Gilmore (Amite, Louisiana) on a roll out, to record a sack.
Redshirt senior defensive lineman Justin Booker-Brown (Spring, Texas) showed nice pursuit to record an ankle tackle. holding the ball-carrier to a short gain.
Tyreke Davis picked a pass off in the flat and then returned it for a touchdown.
True freshman running back Ikaika Ragsdale (Las Vegas) showed off his physicality with a bruising, 12-yard run up the middle.
Kason Martin closed practice on a designed quarterback run that saw him streak down the near sideline for a long touchdown.
