Day 11 Notebook: Defense Clamps Down

DENTON - Day 11 of fall camp, presented by Rhino Steel Buildings, saw the intensity continue to rise, especially during the final team period. The defense had a strong day, specifically in the secondary, clamping down its coverage throughout the majority of the morning practice.

DEFENSIVE PLAY OF THE DAY: Senior defensive lineman Dion Novil (Abilene) blew up a play with a tackle for loss, swallowing the running back up during Wednesday's team period.

OFFENSIVE PLAY OF THE DAY: Practice concluded with a bang for the offense, despite the defense having a strong day in coverage. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Austin Aune (Argyle) hit fellow redshirt sophomore Jyaire Shorter (Killeen, Texas) in stride on a deep ball for a day-ending 60-yard touchdown.

Key Moments:

During the 7-on-7 period early in practice, redshirt sophomore corner Jordan Rucker (Denton) made a nice play on the ball to break up a pass on a slant.
Senior linebacker Tyreke Davis (Denton) jumped a route in the flat to record a pass break-up.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Kason Martin (Manvel, Texas) connected with fellow redshirt sophomore receiver Calen Mayfield (Garland, Texas) for a 25-yard gain over the middle. Mayfield leapt above a pair of defenders to secure the catch.
Redshirt freshman corner Dorian Morris (Mesquite, Texas) had great coverage on a deep ball to break the pass up down the sideline.
Redshirt junior punter Bernardo Rodriguez (Coppell) had a very strong day during the special teams period.
During the team period, Tyreke Davis was in position to keep the quarterback from picking up yardage on a scramble to the right. Coverage downfield forced the pocket to break down and the quarterback to take off to his right.
Redshirt freshman running back Oscar Adaway III (North Little Rock, Arkansas) continued his strong camp with several positive gains, including a 12-yard run to pick up a first down in the early stages of the period.
Redshirt sophomore defensive end Davontae McCrae (Miami) and redshirt freshman defensive end Kenneth Dotson (Houston) combined for a big hit to hold the ball-carrier to a minimal gain.
True freshman running back Isaiah Johnson (Lubbock) ran hard, pinballing off several defenders for a nice gain to pick up about eight yards.
Junior safety Alex Morris (Humble, Texas) came up with a nice pass break-up on a third down pass to the end zone to get the defense off the field.
Aune connected with redshirt sophomore receiver Austin Ogunmakin (Alief, Texas) for a pair of first downs on an early series during the team period.
Senior defensive back Cam Johnson (Houston) made a nice play on a deep ball that hung up, to force an incompletion and get the defense off the field in a third-down situation.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jason Bean threw a dart into a tight window to senior receiver Jaelon Darden (Houston) right on the sideline to pick up 11 yards and a first down on a third and 10.
On back-to-back plays, McCrae recorded run stuffs for minimal gains and later in the same series, recorded a sack.
True freshman defensive back Upton Stout (Houston) met the receiver with a big hit at the same moment the ball arrived to dislodge it and force an incompletion.
Senior safety Makyle Sanders (Tyler, Texas) recorded a pass break-up on a post route.
Redshirt sophomore linebacker Larry Nixon III recorded a tackle for loss after getting good penetration on a run play.
Isaiah Johnson burst through the hole on a second and 10 play for a 60-yard scoring run.
Redshirt sophomore defensive back Keelan Crosby (Anna, Texas) maintained his assignment very well on a fourth and short play, where he stopped the quarterback, who kept on a read option.
Redshirt freshman linebacker Grayson Murphy (Dallas) broke up a pass over the middle during the later stages of the team period.
Redshirt freshman linebacker Gabriel Murphy (Dallas) had a great run fit to hold the ball-carrier to a very minimal gain.
Redshirt sophomore defensive back Jahvon Millard (Atlanta) recorded a pass break-up in the flat towards the end of the team period.
Kason Martin rolled to his right and completed a deep ball to redshirt junior receiver Greg White (Riverdale, Georgia), who went up and got it, and was able to come down in bounds inside the 10-yard line for a first down.
Inside the red zone, Stout had tight coverage and broke up a pass in the end zone.
