DENTON - The UNT women's golf team has a new assistant coach, as head coach Michael Akers announced the hiring of Lindsey McCurdy to replace graduate assistant coach Krista Puisite, who was with the program for the past two years.
McCurdy, a Liberty Hill, Texas, native played collegiate golf at SMU before a two-year stint on the LPGAÂ Symetra Tour as a professional. She recorded four top-10 finishes as a pro, including a T-6th finish at the Symetra Tour Championship in 2019. In 2015, as a sophomore at SMU, McCurdy won the Kansas State Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational and was also a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Women's Amateur.
McCurdy said she always knew she would eventually get into coaching and is thankful for the opportunity to begin the next chapter of her career at an up-and-coming program like North Texas with a coach she's known for years.
"I have always wanted to get into coaching," she said. "Since I played at SMU, I was so excited to get back to the DFW metroplex and work with coach Akers. I have known him since my junior golf days, and I am very grateful he has given me the opportunity to start my coaching career here at UNT. I'm looking forward to a great year with him and his players that he has spoken so highly about!"
Akers said he has no doubt McCurdy will continue the program's run of quality assistant coaches since his arrival in Denton, as she will follow in the footsteps of Kendra Little and Puisite, who will be remaining with the program as a volunteer.
"I am confident Lindsey can come in and continue that tradition," Akers said. "I have known Lindsey since she was a junior golfer. She was and still is a very good player. Her personality will fit in perfectly with myself and the team. Lindsey will relate to the players very well and tee it up with them. She is currently working on her Masters in Sports Psychology, which will be an asset. She has also been around Kinesiology and Biomechanics, as her father is a professor in that field."
