DENTON — North Texas men's basketball head coach Grant McCasland announced Thursday that redshirt senior guard JJ Murray has been placed on scholarship.
The Rowlett native and former walk-on is in his third year with the Mean Green after transferring from Eastfield College where he was an NJCAA All-American and academic all-American.
Since joining UNT in 2018, Murray has been pivotal both on and off the court for the Mean Green under McCasland and helping the program progress and claim the 2020 Conference USA championship.
Murray, who was named to the C-USA Honor Roll after last season, is a mechanical engineer major and the president of the American Society of Engineering Management at UNT and is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers. On the court, McCasland has referred to Murray as one of the team's best defenders.
He scored a season-high eight points in just four minutes on Dec. 28 versus Texas Wesleyan.
He played in eight games last season for UNT and played in three conference games. He had three steals and shot 75 percent at the free throw line.
Murray redshirted his first season with the Mean Green and came to UNT in 2018 as one of Eastfield's all-time greatest players.
Along with his all-American status, Murray scored 1,062 points in two seasons at Eastfield, which was third-most in program history.
Murray also currently serves on the North Texas Athletics Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
