DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team will face Oklahoma State on Nov. 13.
The game is part of the Hoop Hype XL College Basketball Showcase and will be held in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The Hoop Hype XL venue, ticket and tipoff information will be released soon.
UNT is the defending Conference USA champions. They won a program-best 14 league games last year and featured C-USA Player of the Year Javion Hamlet. Head coach Grant McCasland was named the league's Coach of the Year following the season. It was the first time UNT had been named to either of those honors in 31 years. This coming season the Mean Green return eight players from last season's chamnpionship squad including Hamlet as well as fellow starters Zachary Simmons and James Reese. Six-man specialist Thomas Bell who was the team's leading rebounder a season ago also returns.
The Cowboys enter the 2020-21 season with tons of national attention after Cade Cunningham, the nation's No. 1 high school recruit, signed with OSU in November. Cunningham wasn't alone though, Oklahoma State's incoming class is ranked in the top 10 in the nation by most media outlets.
Before last season abruptly ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, OSU appeared to be surging for an NCAA Tournament berth and conference tournament title as they had won eight of its last 11 games. During the season they picked up notable victories over No. 24 Texas Tech, Texas, Houston and Syracuse among others.
Along with Cunningham, OSU in the backcourt will feature junior Isaac Likekele who is a proven big-shot maker and like Cunningham is an NBA prospect.
The Cowboys are led by fourth-year head coach Mike Boynton.
UNT has only beaten Oklahoma State once in its program's history and it was the last time the two teams played in Denton, Nov. 14, 2007. The Mean Green won 82-73. Then freshman and future UNT Athletics Hall of Famer Josh White poured in 25 points that night to lead his team to victory.
