A Year In Waiting…Keira Neal
8/10/2020 9:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
DENTON – Keira Neal expected to suit up for the 2019-20 season as a freshman for North Texas women's basketball, but a knee injury during last year's preseason workouts derailed that plan.
Neal was recruited out of high school to the Mean Green as an elite defender from Edmond, Oklahoma.
"Keira is a defensive guru. She can guard anybody for 94 feet," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "Her passion and heart are on display every single second you watch her. She can create opportunities for herself and for her teammates, finishing and delivering with the best of them. She is strong, determined, and can excel in anything she puts her mind to."
As a senior at Edmond Sante Fe, Neal was The Oklahoman's Big All-City Player of the Year. The 5-9 guard averaged 11 points, six rebounds and nearly 11 assists per game for the Wolves.
While having to redshirt during her first year in Denton was not what she had signed up for, Neal did garner some positives from the experience.
"Being able to watch the game and see the small things that we were missing benefited me," Neal said. "I also had the chance to get stronger and work on my game.
"Not being able to play was very difficult, but I'm ready to get back on the court and win a conference championship."
