DENTON - The National Football League's season is upon us, and it is again time to revisit those in the league that once called Denton home in 2020's first regular season installment of #NFLMeanGreen.
As the season kicks off, three former Mean Green players are on active rosters and are ready to get their 2020 campaigns started, while two more are on practice squads and another has opted out. Los Angeles Chargers receiver Jalen Guyton, San Francisco 49ers running back Jeffery Wilson and New Orleans Saints linebacker Craig Robertson enter their second, third and ninth seasons, respectively. Cornerback Kemon Hall is a member of the Saints' practice squad and defensive end LaDarius Hamilton is a member of the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad, as both look to continue to work for a spot on their active rosters. Fullback Jamize Olawale, also a member of the Cowboys, opted out of the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Guyton appears to have won a starting position as the Chargers' third receiver, and Los Angeles opens the 2020 season in Cincinnati when they take on the Bengals and No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow. That game kicks off at 3:05 p.m. CT on Sunday, Sept. 13, afternoon live on Fox. Los Angeles comes off a disappointing 5-11 season in 2019, and were one of two teams featured this preseason on HBO's Hard Knocks. Guyton broke into the Chargers' active roster in Week 13 of last year and appeared in three games.
Robertson's Saints open 2020 at home against NFC South foe Tampa Bay on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 3:25Â p.m. CT at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The game will be broadcast live on Fox, as Robertson looks to continue his productive NFL career in a reserve role in the Big Easy. The Saints won the division after going 13-3 and fell in overtime to the Minnesota Vikings in the wild card round of the playoffs. Robertson finished 2019 with 27 total tackles (20 solo), a sack, an interception and a pass break-up in 15 appearances, one of which was a start. Robertson was one of six team captains in 2019.
Wilson's inclusion on the defending NFC Champion 49ers' initial 53-man roster marks the first time he has made the opening day roster in his three seasons in San Francisco. The Niners open the 2020 season at home against their division rival, the Arizona Cardinals, on Sunday, at 3:25 p.m. on Fox. In 10 appearances, Wilson finished 2019 with 27 carries for 105 yards and four touchdowns and also caught three passes for 34 yards and another score, which came late in the fourth quarter of a home win over Arizona in Week 11. He also caught one pass for 20 yards in Super Bowl LIV.
