Â
The North Texas women's golf team begins its season against a loaded field after a nearly seven-month layoff because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The last time the team competed, they won the Entrada Classic, hosted by BYU, in early March. It was the first team title in nine years for the Mean Green, and senior Lauren Cox became the first player to win an individual championship in seven years.
Â
THE EVENT: Belmar Golf Club will play as a par-70 course at 6,079 yards. The teams will play 36 holes on Sunday starting at 8:30 a.m., and will finish with 18 holes on Monday with 8:30 a.m., tee times.
Â
THE FIELD: There are 11 teams participating in the tournament (rankings are final GolfStat rankings from March): Arkansas State, No. 20 Baylor, No. 49 Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, No. 51 North Texas, No. 28 Oklahoma, No. 17 Oklahoma State, No. 45 TCU, No. 2 Texas and No. 24 Texas Tech.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Audrey Tan, Lauren Cox, Katie Finley, Patricia Sinolungan and Emilie Ricaud.
Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on GolfStat.com. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of the day.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: UNT won the Entrada Classic, and Cox won the event for her first collegiate victory and the first for a UNT player in seven years. Tan finished tied for third in the event, whlle Sinolungan tied for fifth. Ricaud tied for 10th.
Â
MOVING UP: North Texas has made significant strides since head Michael Akers took over roughly five years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green ended last season ranked No. 51.
Â
AKERS SAYS: "We are very excited to get back into action at OU this weekend. It really feels like we just took an extended break from March. We have the exact same roster, so it is very nice just getting right back to practice and not having to educate new players on how we operate."
Â
UP NEXT: North Texas will head to the Betsy Rawls Invitational in Austin on Oct. 10-11.
