Women's Golf Set For Tuneup in Houston Match

DENTON - The UNT women's golf team will tee off in competition for the first time this semester with a match against Houston on Friday that will serve a few purposes for head coach Michael Akers and his 21st-ranked squad.
For the first time in more than a year, the Mean Green will have a new face in Shreya Pal, who was the lone member of last year's signing class but couldn't join the Mean Green until now due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. The team will also get a sneak peak at Houston's new chosen venue to host its ICON Invitational next month. The tournament, in which UNT has become a regular in recent years, has previously been played at TPC The Woodlands but is being moved to the Golf Club of Houston, where Friday's match will take place.
"We are excited to get to Houston and compete," Akers said of the match-play competition on Friday. "This match is great for us to knock the rust off but more importantly get a look at the Golf Club of Houston. This will be the first time the Icon will be at a different venue. That event takes place in February and the field is very strong."
The team finished the fall season ranked 21st in the Golfstat national poll after competing almost exclusively against highly ranked Big 12 competition in three fall tournaments and putting together three strong showings. Senior Lauren Cox, who opted to take her extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic, continued to cement her place as the most decorated golfer in the program's history with top-10 showings in all three of those events. She enters the spring season ranked 13th nationally in Golfstat's individual poll.
"Shreya Pal has finally joined the team after missing the fall due to COVID," Akers said. "I am excited for her to play in her first college event and see how things operate. Lauren Cox begins her last semester for us, and I look forward to watching her continue to shine."
There will be no live scoring for the event, but final results will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com.
