ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Before kicking off her final spring slate as a member of the North Texas women's golf team in a couple of weeks, senior Lauren Cox will tee it up with some of the top amateur players in the country beginning Wednesday at the South Atlantic Women's Amateur Championship, otherwise known as "The Sally."
Cox, who's in her fifth year of eligibility after deciding to return for an extra year after the COVID-19 pandemic cut her senior season short last spring, will compete in the tournament for the third consecutive year at Oceanside Country Club, where the tournament has been played annually since 1926.
"It's a good tournament to prepare for our first event coming up in two weeks," Cox said. "The Sally has great history for women's amateur golf. The course is a good test with the wind always picking up in the afternoon, and the field is always full of great college players. I'm looking forward to the week and to getting the opportunity to compete."
The tournament is a four-day event, with the final round set for Saturday. Cox finished tied for 31st a year ago out of more than 100 golfers.
Cox is coming off a red-hot fall season when she played in all three of her team's events, which were almost exclusively against Big 12 competition and several ranked teams. Cox finished tied for third at the Schooner Fall Classic (Oklahoma), tied for eighth at the Betsy Rawls Invitational (Texas) and tied for 10th at the Cowgirl Classic (Oklahoma State) and has already established herself as the most decorated golfer in program history with several program records.
She enters the spring season ranked 13th nationally as an individual by Golfstat, while the team is ranked 21st nationally.
"I'm excited to see Lauren play in the Sally again," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "The Sally is a well respected tournament that many top college golfers play in to warm up for their spring seasons. Lauren's goal is to play professional golf so she is always looking to compete against the best."
