SAN ANTONIO— The North Texas men's basketball team is headed south to play UT San Antonio on Friday and Saturday to begin its 2020-21 Conference USA campaign and championship defense.
Friday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. and will be broadcasted on ESPNU. Saturday's contest is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+. Both games like all games can be heard on the Mean Green Sports Network Learfield IMG College.
"We know (UTSA) wants to get up and down the court and they have two really good guards who have been there for as long as our coaches have been here," said redshirt senior JJ Murray. "We're very familiar with them and we know that's the head of the snake for them."
The Mean Green (4-4) were supposed to start conference play last weekend versus UAB but due to positive COVID-19 tests within the Blazers' program the two games were postponed. UTSA enters this weekend's set of games coming off two losses at Rice last weekend in Houston. The Roadrunners (4-5) gave up 84 and 95 points in each of their two losses at Rice.
Under fourth-year UNT head coach Grant McCasland, the Mean Green are 3-1 versus UTSA including a 98-78 win last season in Denton in what was the two schools' only meeting a year ago. In that 20-point win, UTSA's two-headed offensive monster combined for 61 points. However, the eight other UTSA men's basketball student-athletes who played in the game combined to score just 17. Four of the eight didn't score at all.
UNT's most recent trip to the UTSA Convocation Center in January 2019 though was not so friendly. Jhivvan Jackson — one of the UTSA snake heads — made a game-winning jumper with 3.0 seconds remaining to seal the 76-74 victory and end what was an eight-game winning streak for North Texas.
Under McCasland, UNT has scored 70 or more points 47 times. It's loss at the Convocation Center in 2019 was just one of seven times they've lost a game they scored 70 or more points.
