SAN ANTONIO — Less than 14 hours after the Mean Green men's basketball team beat UTSA 77-70 on Friday night to open conference play, they'll run it back and play the Roadrunners again for the second game of the two-game weekend series.
Saturday's game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. CT from Convocation Center in San Antonio and will be streamed on CUSA.tv and the Mean Green Sports Network Learfield IMG College.
UNT had an all-around team win on Friday but was led by senior Thomas Bell who scored 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Bell knocked down three of his four 3-point attempts, grabbed five rebounds, had three blocks and three assists to lead the way for UNT.
Also scoring in double figures on Friday was Javion Hamlet (15 points), Mardrez McBride (13 points) and Zachary Simmons (13 points). UNT outshot a dangerous 3-point shooting team from deep on Friday as the Mean Green went 10-of-23 while the Roadrunners were 9-of-26. The 70 points UNT held UTSA to was 10 points below its season scoring average.
This marked the third time under fourth-year head coach Grant McCasland that North Texas began conference play with a win. UNT is now 4-1 versus UTSA under McCasland.
The 17 points by Bell were the second-most he's scored this season but the most against a DI opponent. He had 21 points versus LSU Alexandria on Dec. 22. It's the second-most points he's scored in a game against a conference opponent in his career. He scored 20 versus WKU on March 1, 2020.
Bell's three assists on Friday were a season-high.
His three blocks were tied for a season-high and it's the third game in the last four where he's had three blocks.
With the win, North Texas has won seven of its last 10 conference road games dating back to last year.
