DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team beat UT Arlington 64-36 Thursday night at the Super Pit.
UNT (2-1) jumped out to a 26-3 lead and owned a 43-12 advantage at the half. Thomas Bell, who outscored UTA in the first half, led North Texas with a season-high 19 points. Tylor Perry chipped in 12 points off the bench and sophomore big-man Abou Ousmane finished with a career-high 11 points.
"After Monday's tough loss today feels pretty good," Bell said. "Monday left a pretty bad feeling with us knowing we let it slip out of our hands. It was hard to sleep. We put in extra work the last few days so to come out and have a good day is a satisfying feeling."
The 12 points North Texas held the Mavericks (1-3) to in the first half is the fewest a Mean Green opponent has scored on them in the first half in the Grant McCasland era. The 36 total points UNT held UTA to on Thursday fell just shy of the program record for fewest points allowed in a game since moving to the DI ranks. UNT held UTEP to 33 points last year in a 30-point win, which is the program record.
"We played 22 minutes of really good offense and great defense," Ousmane said. "We got a little sloppy in the second half and we know we have to clean that up if we want to compete for another championship but obviously really proud of our performance today after Monday's tough result."
Thursday North Texas prevented UT Arlington from scoring in the first five minutes of the game. After UTA got on the board with a 3-pointer the Mean Green went on a eight-minute defensive stand and took a 26-3 lead.
North Texas held UT Arlington to 21 percent (4-of-19) shooting in the first half and forced them into 11 turnovers, which resulted in 13 UNT points. UNT outrebounded the Mavericks 23-7 in the first half.
Even at the halftime buzzer things were going the Mean Green's way as sophomore Rubin Jones sank a corner 3-pointer right as the buzzer sounded to give his team the dominate 31-point halftime lead.
With five minutes remaining North Texas had nearly cleared the bench and played 12 of its players. Sixth-year senior Jahmiah Simmons made his season debut Thursday night with seven minutes off the bench. Simmons missed all of last season after tearing his Achilles in October of 2020. Thursday was his first game action since March 4, 2020. Simmons finished with two offensive rebounds.
Next up UNT faces No. 3 Kansas in Orlando on Thanksgiving day at the ESPN Events Invitational. The game against the nationally ranked Jayhawks will be broadcast on either ESPN or ESPN2. All Mean Green men's basketball games can be heard on the Mean Green Sport Network.
