Mean Green Look to Stay Hot Hosting Southern
12/12/2021 9:06:00 AM | Women's Basketball
DENTON, Texas – The North Texas women's basketball team is set to host Southern on Monday morning at 11:30 a.m. (CT) in the Super Pit. The Mean Green (5-2) are looking to stay hot against the Southern Jaguars (2-5) and win its fourth consecutive game for the first time this year.
The offensive prowess for North Texas has been the key to winning most of these games. UNT has 11 student-athletes shooting over 40% this season.
The transfers have lit it up lately, Amber Dixon, Aly Gamez, and Jaylen Mallard have all played pivotal roles in the three-game win streak. Dixon and Gamez have had UNT career nights and Mallard has given a much-needed boost from the bench to the starting lineup. It also helps when you have veteran leadership in Jazion Jackson, Preseason C-USA Player of the Year Quincy Noble, and Madison Townley.
As the non-conference slate comes to a close, the Mean Green are determined to improve on its NET Ranking of 61 and carry it over into Conference USA play. North Texas is set up to do damage in league play with the best offense and rebounding squad in C-USA.
UNT will only have two non-conference games left after Monday when they host Wichita State (Dec. 17) and travel to Stillwater to battle Oklahoma State (Dec. 21). Zac Babb will have the call on 88.1 FM KNTU.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MITCHELL
"We're excited to get back on the floor after a break during finals week. I would like to see us finish the non-conference season strong against three tough opponents. Southern's record doesn't truly show how competitive they have been this season. They've played a tough schedule, but I think they are talented, capable and will make a run at the SWAC Championship when the season ends. The desire is to finish 3-0 and take one game at a time. I want us to look ready for when Conference USA play begins in January."
