North Texas Defense Stifles Southern, 65-49

DENTON, Texas – The North Texas women's basketball team put on a gritty performance against a pesky Southern squad on Monday afternoon. With a three-point lead heading into the locker room, UNT found the three-ball on the other side. The defense played a huge role in the victory holding the Jaguars to 29-percent from the floor and 20-percent from deep.
After going one for six in the first half on a Kendall McGruder 3-pointer the Mean Green's offense found life again. North Texas shot the lights out of the gym in the third quarter, going four of six from three and shooting 50-percent from the floor as a team. It was a three-pronged attack of Amber Dixon, Aly Gamez, and Quincy Noble.
In the fourth quarter, it was all Tommisha Lampkin in the paint. Lampkin sealed the deal for UNT with eight points and eight crucial rebounds down the stretch. Lampkin recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Noble had a quiet 17 points, shooting just under 50-percent from the field making four out of five from the charity stripe. Gamez finished with 10 points, six boards, and three assists. The Irving native has registered double figures in four out of the last five games. Madison Townley's eight points and four glass cleaners kept the Mean Green above water in the first half to hold Southern at bay.
North Texas has now won four in a row for the first time this season and look forward to keeping that streak alive when they square off against Wichita State on Friday at 6:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPN+ in the Super Pit. It's one of two final non-conference games before Conference USA play begins on Jan. 1 at Rice.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MITCHELL
"I'm happy with all wins. I think Southern gave us a different look than we are used to seeing which is good because that's what you want to get out of non-conference play. We expected their style of play to make the game a little ugly and that's what they did. I think we could have taken care of the ball a little better and we discussed that as a unit. Turnovers and takeaways are what we'll work on from this game, but I am proud of how we made adjustments on both sides of the floor. They seemed to work well for us after the half to help us get the win. I'm just proud for how they responded when they needed to."
