North Texas Set to Host Wichita State
12/16/2021 10:58:00 AM | Women's Basketball
DENTON, Texas – The North Texas women's basketball team is looking to extend its winning streak to five games on Friday. The Mean Green are set to host the Wichita State Shockers in the Super Pit at 6:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPN+. Zac Babb will have the call on KNTU 88.1 FM.
It's been quite the run for UNT as they have outscored their last four opponents by an average of 17 points. Two on a neutral site and two on the homecourt to improve their record to 6-2. Friday's game will be the last home non-conference game before Conference USA play starts.
December has been a defensive month for the program only allowing 53.6 points per game. Wichita State's offense provides a new challenge for the Mean Green on that side of the floor. The Shockers are averaging 72.6 points per contest however, they are only averaging 61 points on the road. WSU is 2-2 this season away from home. This is where the rubber meets the road, UNT is 5-1 this season when holding its opponents to less than 60 points.
Defense and rebounding will be major keys for the Mean Green to pull out the victory Friday night. The Shockers come into the matchup as the No. 8 rebounding team in the country. North Texas checks in at No. 11 in glass cleaners per contest. UNT has yet to lose the rebounding battle in a game this season and Wichita State has only lost the battle one time that came in a defeat from Northern Iowa.
North Texas will wrap up the non-conference slate next week when they travel to Oklahoma State on Dec. 21.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MITCHELL
"I expect this to be a competitive game, we haven't played them before. However, it is a familiar head coach who was at UTEP when I first came to North Texas. I think they will obviously challenge us on the boards and force us to defend inside. They really use that to their advantage so that's something we must make sure we take care of defensively. When we are at our best, everyone is helping clean up the rebounds so that's what we want to do. The timing of this game is great because we didn't rebound as well as I would've like against Southern. I'm looking forward to how we rebound, take care of the ball, and play defensively."
