DENTON, Texas – The North Texas women's basketball team exploded in a 26-point beat down of metroplex rival, SMU. UNT (5-2) handed SMU (3-5) its largest defeat of the season.
After the 3:08 mark in the first quarter, it was all Mean Green from there on out. The UNT defense stifled the Mustangs offense holding them to zero percent (0-8) from 3-point range for the game. North Texas also outrebounded the Mustangs by a landslide, 44-27. The most impressive stat of the night was UNT going 21-of-24 from the charity stripe, which has been a vocal point from head coach Jalie Mitchell all season long.
Aly Gamez went off in this game scoring 21 points on five shots and made all 13 free throw attempts. Jaylen Mallard continues to show why she should start. The offense has turned it up a notch since she made her debut and has won the last three in convincing fashion. The Little Rock native nearly missed a double-double with seven points and 11 boards.
Preseason Conference USA Player of the Year, Quincy Noble had another solid performance registering 13 points, four rebounds, and two blocks. Madison Townley also nearly missed a double-double with nine points and nine boards. In just 10 minutes of action, freshman Kendall McGruder set a career high in back-to-back games with 12 points all coming from deep.
It was a game that North Texas needed to win, and they did just that. UNT's 26-point win on Friday night was the second largest margin victory for the Mean Green in the all-time series.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MITCHELL
"It was a big win for us in a lot of ways. We talked about how we let one slip away when we were on our home court last time, so it was good to see us do what we did tonight. I thought we executed our game plan and played hard all 40 minutes. It was fun to watch us play together and buckle down on the defensive end of the floor. We talked about cleaning up our offense at halftime and we saw that difference in the second half. I'm proud of our entire team because we've made the improvements, we talked about over our last three games."
