DALLAS – North Texas junior linebacker KD Davis was named First-Team All-Conference USA, while three Mean Green players earned second-team honors and five others were honorable mention selections, the league announced on Tuesday.
Â
Davis, who led the Mean Green in tackles for the third straight season, was the first UNT player to eclipse the 100-tackle mark in a season since E.J. Ejiya totaled 121 in 2018. He finished the regular season with a conference-leading 107 tackles, 15.5 tackles for-loss (tied for second in C-USA), two fumble recoveries and five sacks. Davis helped the Mean Green start their season-ending five-game win streak to gain bowl eligibility with an eye-popping 18 tackles in the first of those five wins over Rice back on Oct. 30 – the most tackles for a UNT player in a game since at least 2000.
Â
Senior running back DeAndre Torrey, who worked his way into the North Texas record books in several capacities this season, earned second-team honors, along with junior center Manase Mose and senior defensive tackle Dion Novil.
Â
Torrey rushed for 1,215 yards with 13 rushing touchdowns in the regular season while rushing for at least 100 yards in five games and running for a career-high 244 yards in the season opener. He's currently tied with running backs coach Patrick Cobbs for second on the program's all-time rushing touchdown list with 36. He's alone in second place with 41 total touchdowns in his career and is fourth on the program's all-time rushing yards list with 3,228.
Â
A lot of UNT's five-game win streak to close the season was in thanks to the play in the trenches on both sides of the ball, highlighted by Mose and Novil.
Â
Novil finished the regular season with 45 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for-loss and three sacks to go with an interception, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, a blocked punt and a blocked PAT. He had a season-high 10 tackles in a win over Rice. Mose has started 47 straight games, mostly at center for the past two seasons, and helped lead the way for the nation's No. 3 rushing offense (245.2 ypg) and the best for UNT since 1959. In the five-game winning streak, the UNT offensive line allowed just one sack.
Â
The five players who earned honorable mention status are: junior tackle Jacob Brammer, junior long-snapper Nate Durham, junior kicker Ethan Mooney, redshirt freshman defensive end Grayson Murphy and senior tight end Jason Pirtle.
Â
The Mean Green will play Miami (Ohio)Â in the Frisco Football Classic on Dec. 23 at 2:30 p.m., at Frisco's Toyota Stadium.
