DALLAS – Three North Texas players – running back Ayo Adeyi, guard Gabe Blair and defensive tackle Roderick Brown - were named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team, the league announced on Tuesday.
Much of the Mean Green's five-game winning streak to close the season and earn bowl eligibility can be attributed to the team's play in the trenches, where Blair and Brown shined all season.
Blair, a 6-3, 303-pound local product from Texas powerhouse Denton Guyer HS, made his collegiate debut in the team's second game and made his first career start in Game 3 against UAB before starting the next nine games. He and his teammates up front helped pave the way for the nation's third-ranked rushing offense (245.2 ypg).
Brown, a 6-1, 285-pounder from North Forney HS, played in 10 games, missing back-to-back wins over Southern Miss and UTEP, and finished the regular season with 19 tackles, four tackles for-loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles. He had a season-high seven tackles and two tackles for-loss against Missouri.
Adeyi, a 5-7, 197-pound back from Mansfield Legacy HS, played in the team's final nine games of the regular season after making his collegiate debut against Louisiana Tech. He helped steady the running game after several injuries impacted the running back room and finished with 78 carries for 479 yards and six rushing touchdowns – good for second on the team.
The Mean Green will play Miami (Ohio) in the Frisco Football Classic on Dec. 23 at 2:30 p.m., at Frisco's Toyota Stadium.
