History between UNT and USM
A Mean Green loss last season to the Lady Eagles evened the all-time series at 5-5. Before that defeat, UNT won the previous three meetings, including a win in the opening round of the 2018-19 Conference C-USA Tournament and a program-first victory at Southern Miss during that regular season.
Last meeting
DENTON (Jan. 16, 2020) – After taking the lead early in the fourth quarter, the Mean Green went cold from the field and scored just three points throughout the final eight minutes in a 65-57 loss to Southern Miss on Thursday night.
North Texas (7-10, 1-4 C-USA) knocked down three consecutive shots to open the fourth quarter and give themselves a 54-49 lead. From that moment on, the Mean Green struggled to find the bottom of the net. North Texas missed its next eight shots and committed six turnovers during an eight-minute scoring drought that saw the Golden Eagles (11-4, 3-1 C-USA) go on a 16-0 run to ice the game.
Freshman guard Randi Thompson shined for UNT. Thompson followed her 25-point outing last Saturday with a team high 15 points in the loss to Southern Miss. She hit 50% of her 3-pointers in the first half. Anisha George added 13 points for UNT, and N'Yah Boyd finished with eight points, six rebounds and six assists. Charlene Shepherd added another nine points and three rebounds.
McNelis Strong
Following the announcement of Southern Miss head coach Joye Lee-McNelis' battle with stage 4 lung cancer in January there has been an overwhelming amount of support shown towards Coach McNelis, by not only the Southern Miss family, but also the entire college basketball community.
"Words cannot express how thankful my family and I are for everyone who has reached out to me in some way. I am overwhelmed emotionally and thankful for all that have lifted me up in prayer, called or text. I am humbled and so thankful," McNelis said of the support.
Coach McNelis recently received good news about her treatment options. Foundation one testing of the original tumor came back with EGFR mutation, which allows McNelis to take a targeted therapy beginning soon. Her doctors will reevaluate in shortly.

Mitchell Making History
North Texas women's basketball had not ever won a game in Ruston with a series that began in 1989. That was until head coach Jalie Mitchell arrived. The program's first victory at LA Tech came two seasons ago in 2018-19 in Mitchell's fourth year. North Texas has now defeated the Lady Techsters four times overall, all coming under head coach Jalie Mitchell. The Mean Green were 0-12 all-time against LA Tech before Mitchell's arrival.
Shooting off the Rust
It had been 18 days since the Mean Green last took the court before the series at LA Tech. In the game one loss, North Texas struggled from the field while shooting a season-low 29-percent. The numbers decreased even further from outside the arc as the team connected on just 4-of-28 and at one point missed 16 consecutive 3-pointers. During the day two win, the numbers spiked to a 43-percent showing overall and more than doubled in accuracy from deep at 32-percent.
Efficient Freshman
Tommisha Lampkin has been a steady contender in the rotation for the Mean Green. In just 10 minutes per game, the freshman forward averages nearly 5.0 points on 55-percent shooting and 3.7 rebounds. Using the average per 40 minutes method, Lampkin is second on the squad in both scoring at 19.6 points per game and rebounding with 14.7.
Townley Pulling 'Em Down
If there is a rebound to be grabbed, Madison Townley is your best bet. The redshirt senior recorded a career-high 21 boards in the win at UAB Jan. 1 for the fourth-highest total in program history and the top performance in Conference USA this year. Townley ranks seventh in C-USA with her 7.9 per contest and is third in offensive rebounds at 3.9.
Starting Numbers for Lee
Since moving into the starting lineup, Rochelle Lee's statistics have increased significantly. In the past eight contests, the redshirt junior forward is averaging 5.6 points and 4.0 rebounds, compared to 1.0 and 0.3, respectively, before being in the first five. In the victory at UAB Jan.2, Lee scored a career-high 14 points, and in the win over UTSA Jan. 9 she collected a career-high 11 rebounds.
A Noble Start
Quincy Noble has scored in double figures in all but one contest this season and has surpassed the 20-point mark five times already. Her career-high 30 points came at Louisiana Dec. 4, and she most recently registered 28 at LA Tech Feb. 6. The redshirt sophomore guard has twice knocked down six 3-pointers, the fourth-highest single game performance from beyond the arc in program history. Noble's 18.8 points per game ranks fourth in Conference USA. She leads the league in 3-pointers made per game (3.31), good enough for eighth in the nation, and is second in C-USA in 3-point percentage (42.6).
Deep Improvement
The Mean Green struggled from the 3-point line last season by connecting on just 27.8 percent of their attempts, ranking them 300 of the 348 teams in NCAA Division I. So far in 2020-21, the team is hitting at a 33.9-percent clip to sit second in Conference USA.
Free Throws Woes
The Mean Green have had trouble at the line, ranking ninth in Conference USA at 63.7 percent. However, three main contributors from last year have made marked improvements since 2019-20. N'Yah Boyd went from 57-percent last season to a much improved 73-percent. Madison Townley went from 51 to 63-percent, and Jazion Jackson has gone up 13 percentage points.
Start of C-USA play
With the win at UAB Jan. 1, North Texas has earned victories in the past three Conference USA openers. Under head coach Jalie Mitchell, UNT is 4-2 all-time when beginning league play. The Mean Green compiled a 3-0 Conference USA start for the first time in program history in 2018-19 and increased it to 5-0 with the wins over UTSA and one at UTEP.
Non-con results
UNT finished non-conference play at 3-2 in 2020. Dating to the 2015-16 season, the beginning of head coach Jalie Mitchell's tenure, the Mean Green are 32-21 in games occurring before the start of C-USA competition. The team posted a mark of 6-7 in pre-conference play last season.
Last Mean Green Outing
RUSTON, La. – Quincy Noble scored a game-high 28 points to lead North Texas women's basketball to the second-ever Mean Green win in Ruston in a 63-58 victory over Louisiana Tech inside Thomas Assembly Arena Saturday.
Noble knocked down six 3-pointers for the second time this season to again achieve the fourth-highest single game performance from beyond the arc in Mean Green history. Jazion Jackson added 11 points and a team-high five rebounds.
