ICON Invitational
Golf Club of Houston | Humble, Texas
The North Texas women's golf team returns to the ICON Invitational, where they notched a sixth-place finish a year ago, but this time, it's a new venue at the Golf Club of Houston. The Mean Green will kick off their spring tournament schedule with their eyes set on a Conference USA championship and an NCAA tournament berth.
THE EVENT: The Golf Club of Houston will play as a par-72 course at 6,392 yards. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and will finish with 18 holes on Tuesday. Both days will begin with 8 a.m. shotgun starts.
THE FIELD: There are 15 teams participating in the tournament, 14 of which are ranked in the top 50 nationally (rankings are from the GolfStat national poll): No. 1 Baylor, No. 12 Houston, No. 11 Kent State, No. 3 LSU, No. 30 Michigan State, No. 36 North Texas, No. 17 Northwestern, No. 6 Oklahoma State, No. 42 Purdue, SMU, No. 34 TCU, No. 33 Texas, No. 39 Texas A&M, No. 50 Texas State and No. 29 Texas Tech.
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Lauren Cox, Audrey Tan, Patricia Sinolungan, Emilie Ricaud and Katie Finley. Marija Jucmane will be competing as an individual.
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on GolfStat.com. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of the day.
LAST TIME OUT: UNT finished fifth at the Cowgirl Classic, hosted by Oklahoma State, in the final event of the fall slate. Lauren Cox tied for 10th in the event and won Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors. Audrey Tan tied for 20th.
MOVING UP: North Texas has made significant strides since head Michael Akers took over roughly five years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are currently ranked No. 36.
AKERS SAYS: "Houston has had some weather challenges over the past week, but the forecast looks good for the tournament days, and we are ready to go. Our goal is to get some extra reps in before Monday and prepare the best we can. The field is loaded with great teams, so we have an opportunity to improve our national ranking."
