DALLAS - North Texas junior Audrey Tan led the way for the Mean Green women's golf team on Monday and Tuesday at the ICON Invitational, finishing in a tie for 10th place and helping her team to a strong finish. For her performance, Tan was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week, the league announced on Thursday.
Tan, who hails from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was the model of consistency for the Mean Green, who ended up setting several program records with their blistering final round that saw them move from 10th to sixth place on the leaderboard. She finished the three-round tournament with a 70-71-71-212 to finish in a tie for 10th place. Tan was tied for third in the field in Par 5 scoring at 5-under and had 11 birdies over the course of the three rounds. It is the first Golfer of the Week honor in her decorated career at North Texas.
"I'm just proud of myself because I didn't have the best preparation golfwise going into the tournament, but I put all my focus into what I could control and my mindset, and I'm just glad the results showed that," Tan said. "Ultimately, I'm just incredibly grateful for the opportunity to play some golf at an amazing course and event and was blessed with some great weather."
The tournament was loaded with quality competition, as 12 of the 13 teams entered the tournament ranked in the top-50 nationally. That included some highly ranked individual players, including the nation's top player from LSU, who finished seventh, three shots ahead of Tan. Tan out-dueled several of those players, including nine top-100 players and three top-20 players, including the country's fifth-ranked golfer.
"It is very exciting to see Audrey recognized by the conference today," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "Audrey has improved so much in the past 2 1/2 years. She works extremely hard, and I am pleased to see her rewarded. I feel many of her accomplishments have not been mentioned as much, due to Lauren's (Cox) record-breaking performances. If you look at the record book, Audrey is the second-best player in UNT history. She arrived at UNT for her freshman year when she was just 16 years old. She has been an amazing addition to our program."
Tan and the 26th-ranked Mean Green will return to action March 9-10, at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in San Antonio.
Fans can follow the program throughout the season on Twitter and Facebook, as well as on MeanGreenSports.com.
