HUNTINGTON, WVa. — The two highest ranked NCAA NET programs in Conference USA, North Texas and Marshall, face-off this weekend in West Virginia as the Mean Green aim to firm its first-place divisional standing.
The Mean Green (12-6, 8-2) take on the Thundering Herd (12-5, 6-4) Friday at 6 p.m. CT and Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. Friday's game will be broadcasted on ESPNU and Saturday can be seen on Stadium. Both games will be broadcasted over the air on the Mean Green Sports Network Learfield IMG College.
UNT beat Marshall in Huntington last season, 67-64. The victory was the start of an eight-game winning streak for North Texas and propelled them to the 2020 C-USA regular season championship.
Javion Hamlet led UNT with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting. But it was late defensive stops and steals by role players that carried the Mean Green to victory over Marshall last season.
With just four games remaining on this season's schedule before the conference tournament in Frisco begins, North Texas sits in first place of the West Division standings with an 8-2 (.800) league record. It's the same record they had last season through 10 league games.
Due to COVID and weather cancelations that every team across the country has faced, league standings are based on winning percentage. Right behind UNT in the West Division standings is UAB and Louisiana Tech who are both 10-4 (.714), which means they are less than a game behind the Mean Green.
As of Friday morning, North Texas and Marshall are the two highest ranked Conference USA teams in the NCAA NET.
North Texas has a No. 69 NET national ranking while Marshall sits at No. 70.
Though the Thundering Herd sit in third place in the East Division standings, they are within striking distance of first place and on the verge of earning a double bye in the conference tournament in two weeks.
