FRISCO — Javion Hamlet scored eight of his 15 points in the final 3:23 to help the North Texas men's basketball team upend Old Dominion, 61-55 in a quarterfinal round of the 2021 Air Force Reserve C-USA Men's Basketball Championship presented by Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Thursday night.
Hamlet, who played all 40 minutes, pulled down nine rebounds and dished out seven assists in the win to guide the Mean Green to their first semifinal appearance in a conference tournament since the 2012 Sun Belt Tournament. In UNT's two wins in Frisco, he is averaging 18 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists and playing 39 minutes per game.
Zachary Simmons was 6-of-8 from the field and scored 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and Mardrez McBride broke out of a slump to score 14 points for North Texas (15-9).
"We knew rebounding was going to be huge tonight and in the end we got more offensive rebounds, more second chance points and for us that was the ball game," said head coach Grant McCasland.
North Texas advances to play Louisiana Tech in Friday's semifinal at 2 p.m. CT. They split a pair of close games the first weekend of February in Denton.
"The biggest thing for us is getting some rest," McCasland said. "If we want to win the game it starts now and getting some rest."
Friday's game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network and the Mean Green Sports Network Learfield IMG College.
