Women's Golf Eyeing Victory In San Antonio

The North Texas women's golf team heads down Interstate-35 looking for a tournament victory when they take on the field at San Antonio Country Club. The Mean Green are the highest ranked team in the field after moving up seven more spots in the national poll to No. 29 following a strong showing last time out at the ICON Invitational.

THE EVENT: San Antonio Country Club will play as a par-72 course at 6,131 yards. The teams will play 36 holes on Tuesday and will finish with 18 holes on Wednesday. Both days will begin with 8:30 a.m. shotgun starts.

THE FIELD: There are eight teams participating in the tournament: Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, No. 29 North Texas, No. 48 Old Dominion, SMU, Texas State, No. 31 Texas Tech, UT San Antonio.

REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Audrey Tan, Lauren Cox, Katie Finley, Patricia Sinolungan and Emilie Ricaud. Marija Jucmane and Shreya Pal will be competing as an individuals, and it will mark Pal's collegiate debut.

LAST TIME OUT: UNT finished sixth at the ICON Invitational and set three program records in the process with a scorching final-round 280. Audrey Tan tied for 10th in the event and won Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors. Lauren Cox tied for 12th, and Katie Finley tied for 19th.

MOVING UP: North Texas has made significant strides since head coach Michael Akers took over roughly five years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are currently ranked No. 29.

AKERS SAYS: "We are excited to get back into competition in San Antonio. This certainly is a different situation than our program has been in the last few years. We are the best ranked team in the event and need to win to preserve our great ranking. Our team will be playing together in a fivesome, so the ladies need good energy and need to feed off each other. We played the same format at OU in the fall and did very well. The San Antonio Country Club is an old-school course with large trees and small greens. Course management will be important, and we need to pay attention during the practice round and take good notes."
