The North Texas women's golf team returns to competition on Sunday in the third edition of its host tournament, The Bruzzy, which returns to Lantana Golf Club for a second time after the inaugural event was held at Maridoe Golf Club in 2018. Â
Â
THE EVENT:Â Lantana will play as a par-72 course at 6,421 yards. The teams will play 54 holes over two days beginning Sunday with two rounds and concluding Monday with the final 18 holes. There will be a shotgun start on both days at 8:30 a.m.
Â
THE FIELD: There are 16 teams participating in the tournament: Colorado, No. 17 Houston, No. 29 Iowa State, Kansas State, No. 16 Miami, Missouri, No. 38 North Texas, No. 33 Oklahoma, No. 7 Oklahoma State, SMU, San Diego State, No. 42 TCU, No. 21 Texas, No. 30 Texas Tech, Tulane and UTSA.Â
Â

Â
LAST TIME OUT: UNT finished sixth at the MountainView Collegiate in Tucson last weekend and were led by senior Lauren Cox, who tied for 20th and earned Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors for the third time this year and fifth time in her career.
Â
MOVING UP: North Texas has made significant strides since head coach Michael Akers took over roughly five years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green are currently ranked No. 38.
THE NAMESAKE: The tournament is named for distinguished UNT alumnus Jerome Max "Bruzzy" Westheimer Jr., who graduated from UNT in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in administrative management. He has gone on to be a successful businessman in the oil and gas industry and president and CEO of the Jerome Westheimer Family Foundation and has made numerous contributions to the university - notably the men's and women's golf programs. Those included supplying each program with a custom van to help with transportation of the teams and funding an on-campus golf practice facility that will bear his name, which is currently under construction.
Â
AKERSÂ SAYS:Â "We are very excited to host some great teams this weekend at The Bruzzy," head coach Michael Akers said. "This event is regarded as one of the best in the nation. We are so thankful for Bruzzy Westheimer and his kindness to make this event possible. I am a big believer in giving these ladies the same experience that the men get. The players in our event will leave feeling like they received first-class treatment."
