DALLAS – North Texas junior Audrey Tan led the way for the Mean Green women's golf team on Monday at The Bruzzy, finishing in a tie for second place and helping her team to a third-place finish in a strong field of several ranked opponents. For her performance, Tan was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week, the league announced on Thursday.
Tan, who hails from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was the model of consistency for the Mean Green, as she often has been this year. She finished the three-round tournament with a 72-71-70, highlighted by her 2-under score on Monday with a strong wind blowing all day. She finished the tournament at 3-under par. Tan was tied for third in the field in Par-4 and Par-5 scoring and had 11 birdies over the course of the three rounds to go with 36 pars. It was the second Golfer of the Week honor in her decorated career at North Texas, with the first coming just more than a month ago after the ICON Invitational in late February.
The Mean Green's third-place finish included wins over five top-50 teams and moved the team's national ranking from No. 38 to No. 30 – all but ensuring the Mean Green of an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Tan finished better than all seven of the top-100 players in the field and moved her own ranking up to No. 139.
"Audrey had a very solid showing at The Bruzzy," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "Our field was very impressive to say the least. She has come so far with managing wind. That final round was tough. Her new driver and growing experience with changing weather conditions was evident with her 2-under-par round. I'm excited to watch her and the team compete in the postseason."
Tan and the Mean Green will return to action on April 12 in a match against TCU at Hawks Creek Golf Club in Fort Worth in a final tuneup for the Conference USA tournament, scheduled for April 19-21 in Fort Myers, Florida.
