DENTON — The 2021 National Junior College Athletic Association DI Men's Basketball Tournament MVP Tylor Perry has signed his National Letter of Intent to the back-to-back Conference USA champion Mean Green.
Perry, a 5-foot-11 guard, led Coffeyville Community College to the 2021 national championship on April 24 after averaging 17.6 points per game for the year and the Red Ravens finished with a 27-3 overall record. He shot 53.2 percent from the field and 43.9 percent from deep this past season.
"Tylor is a proven winner and a national champion at the junior college level," said North Texas assistant coach Matt Braeuer. "He can play both guard positions, is very skilled and knows how to play the game. Tylor loves North Texas and will be a great addition to the program."
Coffeyville won the 2021 title with a 108-99 win over Cowley County Community College. The sophomore Perry scored 18 points and seven assists in the title game.
Leading up to the championship, Coffeyville won five games in six days and the No. 10 seed Red Ravens had upset victories in four of the five wins. Perry was named the tournament MVP after averaging 16.2 points per tournament game and making clutch plays late in games.
The Fort Coffee, Oklahoma, native who played his prep ball at Spiro High School, scored 20+ points 10 times this year including a season-high 28 on March 25 at Neosho County Community College.
In the 30 games played this year, Perry scored 528 points, which was the third-most in the nation. His 901 minutes played led the nation. Also after the tournament, Perry was named NJCAA All-Region VI First Team.
Perry joins a Mean Green squad that won the 2021 Conference USA Tournament to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament where they upset Purdue in the first round, 78-69 in overtime, for the program's first NCAA Tournament victory.
Since signing with the Mean Green, Perry was named a second-team NJCAA All-American.
