Men's Basketball Signs Transfer Big Man

DENTON — The 2021 Conference USA Tournament champion North Texas men's basketball team has signed fifth-year transfer big-man Hameir Wright.
A 2017 Gatorade New York High School Player of the Year that was a top 100 recruit coming out of high school, Wright played the last four seasons at Washington where he started 80 games for the Huskies and played in 122.
He finished his career with 135 blocks at UW, which ranks sixth in program history. He scored over 500 career points and grabbed 400 career rebounds while in Seattle.
The 6-foot-9 senior has shown the ability to stretch the floor as he made 90 career 3-pointers while at UW. He scored a single game career-high 18 points this past February in a game versus Arizona and grabbed a single game career-high 10 rebounds versus Utah last season as well.
Wright was a four-star recruit coming out of Albany Academy Prep. He was ranked 72nd nationally by Rivals, 80th by ESPN and 89th by Scout among prospects that season.
Wright joins a Mean Green squad that is coming off one of its most successful seasons in program history. UNT won the 2021 Conference USA Championship to earn its fourth-ever bid into the NCAA Tournament. They were a No. 13 seed in the tournament, which is the highest they've ever been seeded at the Big Dance. In the 2021 NCAA Tournament, North Texas upset fourth-seeded Purdue in the first round, 78-69 in overtime. It was the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory and the first time they'd beaten an AP Top 25 team since 1971.
UNT returns two starters from its championship team and Wright is expected to compete for a starting role.
