RYE, N.Y. - North Texas senior Audrey Tan is on quite the heater in her recent golf competitions.
In April, Tan claimed the program's first-ever individual conference championship while leading the Mean Green to its first team conference championship in program history. A month to the day after she and her team hoisted those trophies, they made national headlines by winning the Let Them Play Classic after seeing their season unexpectedly end at the NCAA Regional due to heavy rain in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Then, on June 28, she finished T3rd at 1-over par at a U.S. Amateur qualifier at Walnut Creek Country Club to qualify for the U.S. Amateur.
Now, she'll look to continue her run of success this week Westchester Country Club (West Course), which will play at 6,488 yards, against the best amateur players in the country.
"This opportunity means so much to me," Tan said. "I'm honored and beyond excited to play in this event. Not only do I get to play in such a prestigious event, but I'm in New York. It's been my dream to visit New York, and to be here experiencing this through golf is more than I could ask for."
The event features a field of 156 players, which will be cut down to 64 after two days of stroke play (36 holes) on Monday and Tuesday. Those 64 will advance to the match play competition which begins Wednesday with two rounds (Rounds of 32 and 16) on Thursday and the championship match of 36 holes on Sunday, Aug. 8. Match play will be broadcast on Golf Channel and the Peacock streaming service.
The winner receives an exemption to the 2022 U.S. Women's Open, as well as exemption in future U.S. Amateur events, if applicable.
"I'm excited for the opportunity Audrey has at the U.S. Am," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "It is a very big deal to qualify for the Championship, and Audrey has worked very hard to raise her game to an elite level. The course in New York will have different grass and conditions than Texas but she has play north before. Audrey's UNT family will be watching and cheering for her from afar."
Tan, who credited her success this past season to an adjustment to her mental game, said she wants to carry on the strategy that brought her so much success at the end of the season.
"My goal is just to take it one shot at a time and focus on staying truly in the present and enjoying myself on the course."
