DENTON — The North Texas soccer team begins the 2021 season on Friday with a home match versus Southern. First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.

The Mean Green (RV) enter the 2021 campaign as one of favorites to compete for a Conference USA West Division title. They recieved two first place votes in the league's Preseason Ranking on Thursday. A 2021 regular season crown would be the program's ninth Conference USA title. UNT joined the league in 2013.
They welcome Southern on Friday to the North Texas Soccer and Track & Field Stadium. It'll be the first all-time meeting between the two programs. UNT has won 15 straight home openers dating back to 2006.
Head coach John Hedlund, who started the program in 1995, enters his 27th season at the helm of the Mean Green women's soccer team. This season he returns starters Brooke Lampe, Allie Byrd, Elle Marie DeFrain, Madi Starrett, Quincy Sheppard and Olivia Klein to his team this year. Lampe and Byrd on Thursday were named to the 11-person Preseason All-Conference honor. Both were voted first team all-conference a season ago.
Along with his returners, Hedlund has brought in some key newcomers. Midfielder Manami Okada was a junior college all-American last season at Navarro College and in the two exhibitions has shined. She is the first UNT women's soccer student-athlete from Japan and just the third in the program's history to not be from the state of Texas. Along with Okada, UNT welcomes Vanderbilt transfer goalkeeper Sarah Fuller who is a Wylie native. Fuller led Vandy to the 2020-21 SEC Tournament championship last season and made history in November when she joined the football team and became the first woman to play and score a point in a Power-5 football game.
Since moving to its current ground in 2019, the Mean Green own a 16-1-0 home record with the one loss coming in double overtime to then No. 15 Oklahoma State last season. UNT enters the 2021 season having not lost to a conference opponent at home since Oct. 31, 2008.
The Mean Green who are receiving top 25 national votes in the United Coaches Preseason Poll will hit he road right after Friday's match and take on Houston Baptist Sunday night.
