Schooner Fall Classic
Belmar Golf Club | Norman, Okla.
Â
The North Texas women's golf team returns to action with a return trip to the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Oklahoma after taking fourth in the event a year ago.
Â
THE EVENT: Belmar Golf Club will play as a par-70 course at 6,109 yards. The teams will play 54 holes over two days beginning Sunday with 36 holes and concluding Monday, with the final 18 holes. Tee times Sunday will be at 9 a.m., from Holes 1 and 10, while Monday's play will begin at 8:30 a.m.
Â
THE FIELD: There are 15 teams participating in the tournament (rankings are end-of-season Golfstat rankings from 2020-21): No. 15 Baylor, No. 10 Florida State, No. 28 Houston, No. 46 Illinois, No. 38 Iowa State, Kansas State, No. 36 North Texas, No. 32 Oklahoma, No. 3 Oklahoma State, SMU, Texas A&M, TCU, Texas State, No. 47 Tulsa and UTSA.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT:Â Competing for the Mean Green will be Shreya Pal, Audrey Tan, Patricia Sinolungan, Ellie Roth and Katie Finley.
Â
RESULTS: Live scoring and final results will be posted on GolfStat.com. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of the day.
ON THE TUBE: The tournament's final two holes on Monday will be broadcast on Bally Sports Southwest on Wednesday at 3 p.m., and it will be streamed live on Monday afternoon here.
Â
LAST TIME OUT:Â UNT tied for 11th at the inaugural Sam Golden Invitational and was led by senior Audrey Tan, who tied for 12th at 7-under par, while Kansas transfer Ellie Roth made her Mean Green debut and joined Tan under par at 3-under (T24th).
Â
MOVING UP: North Texas has made significant strides since head coach Michael Akers took over roughly five years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared more than 150 spots from that time. The Mean Green ended last season ranked 36th.
THE GOAT: Lauren Cox, who graduated in the spring to finish off her stellar five-year Mean Green career, is currently preparing for Stage II of LPGA Q-School, which is in late October, but she's on staff as a volunteer assistant coach. The team doesn't have a full-time assistant right now, so she was the assistant at last week's season opening tournament in Denton and will be on the course with head coach Michael Akers in Norman, as well.
Â
AKERS SAYS: "This will be the first time our lineup will be without Emilie Ricaud since she arrived on campus. Patty and Emilie battled in qualifying all the way down to the final hole. Patty should be extremely confident heading up to OU.
"We are excited to get up to Oklahoma and compete against a very good field in an exceptional event. Toby Keith and his wife Tricia host this event and do a great job of raising money for the OK Kids Korral in Oklahoma City. This gives our players an opportunity to learn about pediatric cancer and all that goes with the treatment. This event has certainly opened my eyes to how fortunate I have been."
UP NEXT: The Mean Green will wrap up their fall schedule with the Olde Stone Intercollegiate, hosted by Louisville, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on Oct. 25-26.
Â
NEW FACILITY: The Mean Green golf programs are thrilled to break in their brand new Bruzzy's UNT Golf Practice Facility, the new $3 million on-campus facility that features state-of-the-art technology, such as TrackMan, swing catalysts, indoor hitting bays, a short-game area and a PuttView indoor putting green.
