HUNTINGTON, West Virginia — The North Texas men's basketball team, winners of seven of its last eight games, hits the road Thursday to play its first away league game this season as they face Marshall at 6 p.m. CT from the Cam Henderson Center.
The game pits the nation's third most deliberate tempo team versus the country's third fastest tempo team.
Thursday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and on the Mean Green Sports Network with Dave Barnett and Hank Dickenson on the call.
"We have to play our game and not lose control of playing our style," said senior Thomas Bell. "Marshall is a team that if you blink and are careless can quickly score a lot of points and take all the momentum from you. It's a tough place to play but is always a fun matchup."
North Texas (8-4, 2-1 C-USA) wants to be deliberate and slow on offense. The Mean Green enter the game with an average offensive possession of 20.7 seconds. Marshall (7-8, 0-2 C-USA) meanwhile has the nation's third quickest tempo as its average possession is less than 15 seconds. Under fifth-year head coach Grant McCasland, UNT has three wins over the Thundering Herd. They played twice last season — both at Marshall — and split the two-game series.
AFTER MARSHALL
North Texas travels to WKU on Saturday. UNT is on a two-game winning streak over WKU but hasn't won in Bowling Green, Kentucky since Jan. 28, 2010 in a 84-83 overtime win. North Texas is on a three-game losing streak at WKU.
TOP 10 IN THE NATION
North Texas guard Tylor Perry's 92.8 free throw percentage is the 10th highest in the nation. Perry is 52-56 on the year. The UNT single-season program record for free throw percentage is 90.6 percent (96-106) by Josh White in 2008-09.
OFFENSIVE REBOUNDER
UNT freshman Aaron Scott enters Thursday with 22 offensive rebounds on the year. That's the most among all C-USA true freshmen. Scott is averaging just 15 minutes per game off the bench so far this season. He's grabbed seven offensive rebounds in the last three games combined. The C-USA freshman record for most offensive rebounds in a season is 104 by Old Dominion's Denzell Taylor in 2013-14. The most offensive rebounds by a UNT freshman since 1992 was Zachary Simmons in 2017-18 and Jeremy Combs in 2014-15 with 79.
POINTS OFF THE BENCH
Since 2010, the most points over an entire season a North Texas reserve has scored is 265 by Dominique Johnson in the 2010-11 season. Current UNT reserve Tylor Perry has scored 196 points so far this season through first 13 games. Perry is on pace to score 438 points during the regular season this year. The most points scored by any reserve in the nation since 2010 is 513 by Southern's Malcolm Miller in 2012-13.
FIRST HALF SCORING
Through the Mean Green's first three conference games, Mardrez McBride is averaging 11 points per first half. He's averaging 8 field goal attempts per first half over the three conference games.
ONE OF THE TOP IN THE NATION
North Texas' leading scorer is reserve newcomer Tylor Perry who is averaging 15.1 point per game. As of Monday, his 196 total points scored is the fifth-most in the nation by a non-starter and he is just one of six reserves in the country to lead his respective team in scoring.
