DENTON - UNT women's golf coach Michael Akers announced the signing of Mallorie Luitwieler late Thursday, as the Katy Cinco Ranch product is set to join the Mean Green for the 2022-23 season.
Luitwieler will join an already strong class that includes Granbury product Mason Lewis, who won last year's Class 5A Texas state championship, and Australian golfer Sakura Sugiyama, who will be joining the program this month.
"I am very excited to sign Mallorie to join our team next fall," Akers said. "A coach's job is to predict the future. I look for players who have yet to peak. Mallorie has a huge upside and I believe, in our environment combined with her work ethic, we will see big things."
Luitwieler, whose older sister, Maddie, played golf at Texas before graduating in 2019 and has played in a couple of LPGA Symetra Tour events this year, has had a successful season on the junior circuit. A few results that stand out are a fourth-place finish out of 78 golfers at The Amundi Evian International in Nevada last month and second-place finish at the Collegiate Preview last summer at Lantana Golf Club in Argyle. Just before that event, she finished fifth at The First Tee National Championship in South Carolina and took fourth at the Lake Las Vegas Junior in early June.
Akers, who always looks for accomplished students to join his program, was also impressed with Luitwieler's 3.79 GPA at Cinco Ranch.
"Obviously, with our track record in the classroom I also look closely at grades. She has done a great job in that department and she understands we expect As and Bs."
Coach Akers on Mallorie Luitwieler...
"Mallorie is very aware of what it takes to be successful in college golf. Her sister played at UT so she has been exposed to top-level golf. Back in December, she fired 3-under in the AJGA Senior Showcase, so she has the ability to go low."
