Karlington Anunagba and Samir Williams finished second and third, respectively, in the men’s 60 meters
DENTON, Texas - Chris Samaniego took home the victory in the men's weight throw and followed that up with a third-place finish in the shot put to highlight North Texas track & field's indoor season opener Saturday at the Ted Nelson Invitational in Bryan-College Station.
Â
"It was a good day to start," director of track & field Carl Sheffield said. "Overall, we were pretty competitive. There were some places that we really did well, and some places that I thought we would do better."
Â
Samaniego started off with a bang in the weight throw, recording a mark of 58-1Âľ (17.72m) to get the win. The senior from Monahans, Texas, came back later in the day to place third in the shot put with a throw of 51-9ÂĽ (15.78m).
Â
"Our throwers did really well," Sheffield said. "We had a lot of top-five finishes and several personal bests. Chris is always a guy who comes in and is prepared to do well. That group really does well. The dynamics of the group really prepares him for competition. I think they scored in all of the throwing events today, and Chris is a big part of that."
Â
UNT finished with the top two collegiate times of the meet in the men's 60 meters as Karlington Anunagba placed second (6.771) and Samir Williams finished a split second behind in third (6.774). Anunagba also placed third in the 200 meters, recording a time of 21.56.
Â
In the women's shot put, Macayla Needham finished in third place with a mark of 45-ÂĽ (13.72m).
Â
"That was really good for Macayla because she's coming back from a major knee injury," Sheffield said. "This was her first competition back, and it was good to see her get a good throw."
Â
Next up for the Mean Green is the Sooner Challenge next Saturday (Jan. 22) in Norman, Okla.
Â
"It will be a chance to get a few more people in other competitions and different races," Sheffield said. "We want to make sure that we get a picture of what our conference team needs to look like. We're going to move some people in different races to give them opportunities to get marks. We can compare who and what we need to take to the conference meet."
