Mean Green Upend ACU 4-0 In Season Opener

FORT WORTH — The North Texas women's tennis team began the 2022 season Saturday with a dominant 4-0 win over Abilene Christian on a neutral site in Fort Worth.
The Mean Green (1-0) were led by their underclassmen as freshmen Jasmine Adams and Liisa Vehvilainen each won doubles matches and each won singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore Saki Oyama teamed up with Vehvilainen to win the doubles point and also won her singles match in straight sets to lead UNT to the 4-0 win.
"The team performed really well today," said Adams. "I am so proud of all of the girls efforts and the way we cheered and support each other throughout all of the matches. We worked super hard during this week for preseason. All of our hard work from the week paid off which showed in our performance today. My frist experience for a duel match was better then I expected. I can't wait to compete hard for the rest of the season and represent UNT."
In the four matches that didn't finish, North Texas led in all of them.
Saturday's win over ACU is its second straight shutout over the Wildcats. They beat ACU 7-0 in 2019.
The Mean Green will be back in action Saturday as they face Arkansas State in another neutral site match in Fort Worth.
"Everyone did their best and got the job done today," said Sophia Hummel. "The energy was great and everyone was happy to compete after an intense preseason week. While some were not at their best level today, it was a very successful start to the season and we are pumped for what is to come."
