Marzilio's Runner-Up Showing Increases Open Odds

CASA DE CAMPO, Dominican Republic - UNT sophomore Vicente Marzilio put on quite a show at the Latin America Amateur Championship over the weekend, and his second-place finish earned him a fast track to the final stages of qualifying for both The Open Championship and the U.S. Open in 2022.
Marzilio will be placed into the final stages of qualifying for both major championships after his T2nd finish at the Teeth of the Dog course on Sunday.Â
Marzilio provided perhaps the weekend's most dramatic moments on the Par-5 18th hole on Sunday when he was all that stood between the Cayman Islands' Aaron Jarvis, who is a golfer at UNLV, and victory that brought exemptions to The Masters and The Open Championship.
Marzilio's approach shot was headed right for the pin but fell about 20 yards short and hit an object on the ground, sending the ball off camera and several feet in the air before it reappeared and landed eight feet from the hole to set up an eagle putt that would've sent Marzilio into a playoff with Jarvis.
The eagle putt lipped out, and the defending Conference USA champion had to settle for second place, but it was still an experience he'll learn a lot from and great exposure for the Mean Green program. Marzilio ended each of the four rounds in the top-3 on the leaderboard.
"Vicente played incredible golf this past week under pressure," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "Vichu was an inch away from being in a playoff for The Masters, The Open and other major exemptions while being televised on ESPN. I am proud of how he handled the pressure and fought through all the adversity for four rounds.Â
"The tournament will be a nice springboard for the Palm Desert event next month to open our spring season."
