
Volleyball Suffers Defeat at LA Tech

RUSTON, La. – North Texas volleyball fell in a 3-2 defeat versus LA Tech on Sunday at Thomas Assembly Center.
UNT (10-13, 4-4) finished with more kills and total blocks than the Lady Techsters (10-14, 3-6) but dropped the match in five sets, 20-25, 25-15, 23-25, 29-27, 10-15.
Aryn Johnson improved her career-high mark with 26 kills in the match along with 11 digs, two blocks and two assists.
Sh'Diamond Holly finished with seven total blocks, three solo, eight kills and four digs for 14 points. She was followed by Treyaunna Rush with nine kills, seven digs and five blocks, tallying 13 points.
Libero Aleeyah Galdeira posted 26 digs, eight assists and an ace. Ceci Harness pulled in 30 assists, nine digs and two kills.
Set 1: North Texas fought back from an early deficit and tied the set at 7-7 with Johnson dropping four kills. The hosts took a four-point lead when Avery McCrillis sparked a 5-2 run with a kill and an ace to bring the score to 16-15. The Mean Green would prevent LA Tech from recording three consecutive points for the remainder of the frame but would fall 25-20.
Set 2: UNT established a lead in the second with a four-point run followed by an exchange of points that narrowed the set to 8-7. The Mean Green then went on a 12-1 barrage to push its advantage to 20-8. UNT collected eight kills during the streak with Rush leading with four and McCrillis finishing two. The Lady Techsters mounted a failed comeback attempt to lose the set 25-15.
Set 3: LA Tech were able to build a quick lead, but North Texas stormed its way back with a four-point spell to narrow the gap to 11-10. The hosts pulled out for a four-point advantage before a late run from the visitors closed the gap to 24-23. The stretch included staving off two set points before LA Tech dropped the final point after a timeout.
Set 4: Coach Kristee Porter's team faced a difficult challenge, falling behind 16-10 midway through the set. She took a timeout and adjusted her lineup which led to a 6-1 run that cut the deficit to 17-16 with Johnson tallying three kills. The Lady Techsters regained its lead and pushed the match to the brink at 24-20. North Texas would rally with four points to tie the set at 24-24 which was punctuated with solo stops from Andrea Owens and Rush. UNT would swap points with the opposition and have three attempts to finish the frame, which was done with Ceci Harness dropping a dump kill to take the set 29-27.
Set 5: Johnson finished kills for three of the initial five points to tie the deciding set at 5-5. An 8-2 run gave LA Tech a 13-7 lead. The Mean Green would battle back but drop the frame 15-10.
