
Volleyball Victorious in Conference Clash

DENTON, Texas – North Texas captured a dramatic 3-2 victory over UTEP on Friday at the North Texas Volleyball Center.
The Mean Green (11-13, 5-4) defeated the Miners (13-10, 7-3) in its third consecutive five-set match and fifth of the conference slate, 25-15, 21-25, 25-17, 11-25, 21-19.
"I am always excited about a win, but especially against a good team like UTEP. I was really proud of our team tonight," head coach Kristee Porter said. "We've been working all season on having a competitive spirit, especially when it gets tough. They were under pressure and they responded well, so I was really happy with the results."
Aleeyah Galdeira shined defensively, collecting a match-high 21 digs with five assists and two aces, both in the fifth set. She pushed her total to 418 digs for the year and moved into the top 10 in UNT history for a single season.
Sh'Diamond Holly finished with a team-best five total blocks along with six kills, including the match winner. The UNT defense limited UTEP to a .157 attack percentage which is the second-lowest mark for the Miners in its C-USA schedule.
Treyaunna Rush led the team with 12 kills with Aryn Johnson and Truli Levy each tallying double-digit kills at 11 and 10, respectively. Rush added three block assists and two digs with Johnson collecting five digs and a solo stop.
Setter Alexa Washington led her team in assists and recorded a double-double with 10 digs, her second of the season. Ceci Harness posted 20 assists for the 11th consecutive match, adding three aces.
Set 1: North Texas opened with a five-point run including two kills from both Holly and Johnson along with an ace from Avery McCrillis. The hosts continued to apply pressure, answering each UTEP point before another 5-0 spell pushed the Mean Green advantage to 16-6. UNT would trade points down the stretch to close out the frame 25-15, finishing with 14 kills on 32 sets.
Set 2: The Miners built an early lead before a four-point run from North Texas cut the deficit down to 11-7. UTEP would widen the gap until a 5-0 rally from UNT brought the set within a point at 17-16 with a combination block from Holly and McCrillis. The Mean Green fought to salvage the set but would fall 25-21 to even the match.
Set 3: The two sides balanced one another out in the opening moments of the third, tying one another on five occasions. UNT opened a four-point lead midway through the set at 15-11 with Rush dropping a pair of kills at the tail end of a 7-3 spell. North Texas finished the frame with a 7-1 run to win the third 25-17.
Set 4: UTEP would tie the match in the fourth, capturing the set 25-11.
Set 5: In the early moments of the set, North Texas tied its opponent on four separate occasions including a three-point run to knot proceedings at 9-9. UTEP would pull away and reach match point at 14-11 before a four-point run by the Mean Green flipped the advantage to the home side at 15-14. The Miners called a timeout and subsequently drew even with a kill to balance the score at 15 apiece. The two conference foes swapped points until UTEP took an 18-17 lead for match point. North Texas would answer with Levy and Andrea Owens dropping clutch kills to swap the winning position in its favor. The Miners tied again at 19-19 before Levy collected another kill to push the match to the brink once more. With Harness at the service line, she sent a blistering serve to the UTEP back line that was bumped to the Mean Green side of the net. Holly rose to meet the ball at its highest point and dropped a compact swing on the free ball for the match-winning kill. The fifth set finished with 11 tie scores and four lead changes.
Up Next: UNT is set for a home conference meeting with UTSA on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+. The Roadrunners were swept on Friday against No. 21 Rice. North Texas is 15-21 against UTSA, winning the last matchup 3-2 in San Antonio on Oct. 16.
