All four UNT players earn at least one victory on the weekend
SAN DIEGO (Oct. 3, 2022) – After a slow start against tough competition at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Intercollegiate Championships, the North Texas women's tennis team bounced back and finished strong to post another solid weekend on the court.
The Mean Green were led by Gloria Alogo Piqueras who picked up three consecutive wins over power five opponents after dropping her first match of the tournament.
UNT also got wins from each of the other three competitors in the competition as Matilde Morais, Olivia Malm and Jasmine Adams all won at least one match on the weekend.
Alogo Piqueras, who started the competition by dropping a 6-3, 6-2 match at the hands of Sofia Rojas from Oklahoma State who would go on to win the main draw of the competition, took down opponents from the University of Colorado, the University of Arizona and the University of Iowa.
The freshman defeated Mila Stanojevic (6-0, 6-2), Belen Nevenhoven (7-5, 7-5) and Samantha Mannix (6-2, 6-4) all in straight sets to improve her already impressive UTR score.
Adams was the lone Mean Green competitor to grab a win to open the competition in the main draw of singles play, knocking off Rosanna Maffei of Kansas State (6-3, 7-5).
Both Malm and Morais were able to bounce back after close early losses later in the competition as well with Malm defeating Arizona's Kayla Meraz (4-6, 6-2, 10-5) and Morais taking down Elys Ventura of Missouri (7-6 [8-6], 6-3).
In doubles play, the combination of Morais and Adams teamed up for the lone doubles win of the competition as the duo defeated Stanojevic and Ventura from Colorado 6-4.
The Mean Green will return to action Oct. 14-16 when they travel to Dallas to compete in the Blue and Red Challenge hosted by SMU.
