Soccer Falls 2-0 at Rice

HOUSTON — The North Texas soccer team put 11 shots on target Sunday afternoon at Rice but was unable to score as they lost to the Owls, 2-0, at Holloway Field in Houston.
The Mean Green (7-5-2, 3-2-1) outshot first place Rice (7-7-0, 5-0-0) 18 to 11 and held the Owls to just three shots on target. But Rice's 2022 Preseason All-American midfielder Delaney Schultz made UNT pay as she scored a brace for her team.
UNT got a strong attack from senior Allie Byrd who took four shots and put all four on net. Midfielder Taylor Tufts also had four shots and freshman Summer Brown was close behind with three.
"The difference today was Rice's goalkeeper plain and simple," said head coach John Hedlund. "The 18 shots we hit, probably a quarter of them would have been in the net on most keepers. She played incredible. The result is disappointing, because you have to go all the way back to 2013 when the last time Rice beat us. But we will regroup and move forward like we always do after a loss. I do want to thank all the great UNT fans that showed up tailgating before the game. It is neat to have more fans than the actual home team for these road games."
Sunday's loss ends a nine-match unbeaten streak UNT had against Rice. The Mean Green hadn't lost to the Owls since 2013.
North Texas travels to FIU (2-6-3, 0-3-3) on Thursday for its next match. Thursday's match is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. CT and will be streamed on CUSA.tv.
